Help Wanted!

This just in: J.J. Philbin, one of my favorite writers of the OC, will be doing an interview for this blog!

As you know, I, like many others, often complain about the downward trend in quality since Season One. But J.J.'s episodes have been nuggets of goodness that keep me watching religiously. She's written some awesome eps, including "The Shower", "The Lonely Hearts Club", "The Brothers Grim", "The O.Sea" and "The Swells" (this episode confirmed my love for Taylor Townsend).

At any rate, here's where all of you come in. If you have any questions you'd like me to ask her (whether it's regarding the show, her writing career, etc.), feel free to either leave a comment and/or email me. I'm giving a tentative cut-off date of next Tuesday, February 21st for questions. Hope to hear from all of you.

p.s. I will be filtering, so writing something like "what does Mischa eat for breakfast?" or "why does the show blow?" will only be a waste of time. Besides the answers are "Bagels" and "Your Mom".

*EDIT: thanks for the comments and emails. a LOT of great questions. i'm finally getting my act together with this, so again, thanks for helping me get in gear. oh and to "Anonymous", thanks for commenting. and yes you're right, it is rude of me to not follow up quickly with J.J. one thing though, i'm not anyone's assistant. i actually have a good job. which is why i haven't had much time for blogging. just thought i'd help you get your facts straight for your next angry comment. keep em coming!

Yay! Major congrats go out to you. It's a good thing I checked this so early... hmmmm... Could you ask if where the show is heading now is more similar to season one, as the fans would love I'm sure. (ie. Me! Although I do like the second two, there was more genuine emotion? and continuity in the first season)As well as how she came to get her writing job and what she did before/how she ended up being a writer and such... all questions I would figure you'd want to know yourself, but still thought I'd mention them. Have fun with the interview!

Congrats on getting the interview.
I actually have one main question --
will the adult storylines EVER take center stage again? Meaning, will we have more KANDY moments, more P!D!P!, Kirsten doing something other than cooking and playing sidekick to Julie???? I would love to know.

What's the typical creative process? How much input do you have and how much is simply Josh's vision? How do you decide what scripts you get to write?

What kind of controls are utilized regarding character behavior? For example, is there some sort of "character bible" that the writers can reference to keep them consistent, or is it just up to the writers to view previous episodes and work off of previous behavior?

I would like to know what its' like to work on a show which hasn't gotten any worse or better really -- i mean the quality is about equal -- but since it's season 3 and everyone complains that it's worse. is that frustrating? and did you know at the time that The Rainy Day Women would be one of the best hours of tv ever?

I am an aspiring writer and Josh Schwart'z career is one that I'd like to have. How involved is he anymore? Season 1 it seemed like he wrote almost every episode. Season 2 he still wrote a lot, if not as much. Now it seems like he hardly writes scripts. Does he still work on the show or is he off doing movies? Does he just give everyone a lot of freedom? Is he at clubs and out with girls doing drugs? How many writers are there? Is it a good place to work?

Gee, I thought the answers were "cocaine" and "because Marisa is annoying"...

I stumbled across your blog a couple nights ago when I was reading the Grey's writers' blog. Thanks for all the music!

Ask her if she can give us any spoliers at all. Like if Seth and Summer will still be happy at the end of the season.

I'm interested in working with a TV show as a music supervisor. I have a lot of knowledge about older and modern music, a broad variety of genres I love, and I obviously breathe, sleep, and live music. How would I prepare for a job like that? Any degrees that might help?

I agree with the person who asked about a 'character bible' - basically I want to know how they try to keep characters and events constant with so many writers. So I guess I'm asking how they work to keep continuity.

I don't know if you'd do this, but if you're open to suggesting things for the show, here's some thoughts:
Give Ryan a backbone (which was sort of happening last episode)
Make the couples actually deal with their issues
Move the focus away from Marissa a bit

I'd also like to get an idea of the creative process behind writing an episode. Is it just the writer, or do they confer with other writers or Josh? Who comes up with the ideas for the episodes - is there some huge plan of the season somewhere, or do they just make stuff up as they go along.

I might be back with more ...

i'd like to know:

How is it decided who will write what episode? Also, how do all of the writers keep the storylines, even subtle facts, straight if they are writing at different times?

Also, have you or any other writers ever written a scene specifically with a song in mind? Obviously, because the music is so perfect at times, it seems like scenes are sometimes written around specific songs.

thanks for getting this awesome interview

I'm back with more questions!

How did she get into writing? How did she get involved with The OC?

When she has to write an episode, what process does she goes through? Like is she given an outline by someone, or any ideas at all, or is it all her? Then what happens?

How does it feel to see people on TV acting out her words?

If she could have anything happen on the show, what would it be?

What are her thoughts on the characters/situations?

Can she give any hints as to upcoming episodes?

Thanks!

Didn't you already interview her? It'd be nice to read the interview, I'm curious to know her answers. Thanks.

Good Lord, sorry guys. I've been terribly busy with writing deadlines... and I've neglected to follow up on this. Thanks for the comments, both the belligerent and kind ones, as they help me get my ass back in gear.

I will make it a goal to post something around the next new OC episode.
