iPod Roulette

I'm too lazy to finish my "A Year In Concerts" post, so we're going to play a little game I'm stealing from The Onion, which was stolen from my writing partner, which was probably stolen from a 13 year old in Suburbia.

The iPod Shuffle. You know the rules. No lying, no cheating, what you see is what you get. Alright, first ten, here we go...

"On Top" - The Killers [buy album]
Oh Brandon Flowers, why'd you have to go and make a bad Bruce Springsteen album? And then tell the world it was the second coming? It makes me miss even the lesser songs off of Hot Fuss, like this one, which is still pretty awesome.

"Take Me Anywhere" - Tegan and Sara [buy album]
If you haven't given these Canadian-born-lesbian-identical-twin-sisters a chance, you really should. If you have and you weren't impressed, then listen to this song again. Or this one. If you're still not a fan, then you're clearly prejudiced against lesbians or Canadians or twins. Shame on you.

"Answering Machine" - The Replacements [buy album]
A wonderful little, uplifting number for all of you in long-distance relationships.

"Try to breathe some life into a letter
Losing hope, never gonna be together
My courage is at its peak
You know what I mean
How do you say you're okay to an answering machine?
How do you say good night to an answering machine?"

"Back To Hell" - Alkaline Trio [buy album]
Any other Trio fans out there? If so, check out Matt Skiba's side project, Heavens. They're playing a few shows in LA in March, let's go!

"Your Legs Grow" - Nada Surf [buy album]
One of my favorites off their latest album.

"If you were here, baby, we'd increase the dose
There was no fear in my room when we got close
Call me anytime you've got a ghost
And you're the only person in the world I feel that way about
And if you move off to the side I'll get swept back out
Where it's cold but not that deep cause your legs grow"

"Cherry Bomb" - The Runaways [buy album]
I love you Joan Jett. Girls playing rock and roll in leather and lingerie never gets old.

"California" - Phantom Planet [buy album]
Ah, fitting. Anyone else feel weird yesterday without The OC? It felt like it should still be around, a phantom feeling if you will. Har har. Thank you.

"Fuckin' In The Bushes" - Oasis [buy album]
I forgot I had this song. First heard it in Snatch. Random fact of the day, the song contains samples from Murray Lerner's documentary, "Message to Love - Isle of Wight 1970".

"You Got Me All Wrong" - Dios Malos [buy album]
Geez, do I have any songs not featured on The OC?? The correct answer is no.

"Fall In Two" - Guster [buy album]
Off their album Parachute, this is a fun song, reminiscent of Simon & Garfunkel. I'm generally not a huge fan of Guster's earlier material though, only because I think it furthers people's assumptions that they are just another "college frat boy" band, which is definitely NOT the case. Listen to the albums Keep It Together and Ganging Up On The Sun. Amazing songwriting and harmonies. Check out their myspace, I love their "Joe's Place" videos.

Phew, done. Nothing too embarrassing. I'm just waiting for "Shape Of My Heart" by the Backstreet Boys to pop up one of these weeks. Leave a comment with your iPod shuffle list!

1. Next Year - Foo Fighters
- Good stuff! This song takes me back, all the way to freshman year of high school, when my brother would drive to school playing this CD and that Incubus one with the fish on it.
2. Dirty Little Secret - Sarah McLachlan
- Meh. Take or leave it. She has a pretty voice, and the Lilith Fair in me wants to love her.
3. Delta (Little Boy Blues) - Badly Drawn Boy
- Oh God, this whole soundtrack was so great! From "About a Boy". Sort of reminds me of some of the cool little jazzy songs from "Cowboy Bebop" -- not that I watch anime anymore.
4. Push - Sarah McLachlan
- Crap, I gotta get some of this generic McLachlan off my computer.
5. We Will Rock You - The String Quartet
- Their tribute to Queen. I love the electric violin -- or else, I think it's electric violin? Okay, I know nothing about music. I could also give or take this song.
6. Perfect Time of Day - Howie Day
- Why do I have Howie Day? This is the live version that Kink 101.9 in Portland, Oregon put out. It's better than the original -- kinda moody -- but still not great. I still sing to it.
7. Hero - Mariah Carey
- She may be crazy now, but there was a time, people! A time when she could make me all teary and hormonal. Unfortunately, my bootleg version cuts off at 1:31 -- why?
8. Get a Clue - Simon and Milo
- Simon and Milo is an incredibly, enormously poppy Canadian duo that got featured in some Disney Channel movie a few years ago. Very, very catchy. I make no apologies for this one.
9. Beloved Wife - Natalie Merchant
- "Tigerlily" was one of my first favorite albums -- that and one by Collective Soul. My dad has pretty good taste in music, I think. But this CD still classic and remains a favorite of mine.
10. A Cautionary Song - The Decemberists
- I love The Decemberists. I don't know that they could ever really disappoint me, especially not live. Oh, Colin Maloy. So dramatic, it hurts.

*The secret to liking Sam's Town is to keep it (and only it) in your car...when it's all you have to listen to, you eventually like most of the songs.

**I bought P!atD because you posted three of their songs last year and I loved them. I continue to love them even though I was one of approximately five people old enough to drink at their last concert (including them, excluding parents).

Half of my music isn't even on my iPod and a little more than half is from this site. I've had my iPod on shuffle all day and I don't want to restart it so some good stuff (213 songs) don't have a chance of showing up. Anyways here it goes:

1)Strict Machine- Goldfrapp
2)What I See- Serial Joe
3)Here It Goes Again- OK Go
4)Crash Into Me- Dave Matthews Band
5)Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades- Brand New
6)Swing Low, Sweet Chariot- The Soul Stirrers (*I'm rolling my eyes)
7)Step It Up- The Bamboos feat. Alice Russell
8)For the Love- Drew Sidora feat. Mario
9)Are You Gonna Be My Animal- it's a mash up of Jet's "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" and the Muppets Manamana song
10)Dead Skunk (In the Middle of the Road)- Loudon Wainwright III

I was sooo tempted to cheat and skip some of those because I tend to skip some of them normally when they come up. I haven't gotten around to deleting stuff I don't like/listen to anymore... (ie #6,8, and sometimes 9)

1. Better Days - Goo Goo Dolls
If I hear this song again, I'm going to shoot my computer. Or better yet, maybe I should just erase it off of my playlist.

2. Explode - Sugarcult
Not even listened to this song yet.So far not impressed.

3. So Far Away - Crossfade
Without a doubt one of my favorite songs. I'm quite impressed it showed up in shuffle since I can't ever get it to play when I need it.

4. Suddenly I See - KT Tunstall
It's a song from Greys Anatomy. Enough said. It also happens to be a result of the "save target as..." button.

5. Survive - Rise Against
Yet another song that doesn't impress me. As is, I purchased the entire CD on iTunes and here it is.

6. Accidently In Love - Counting Crows
If only I could listen to this song without conjuring up images of a green creature voiced by Austin Powers.

7. You Won't Be Mine - Matchbox 20
One of my favorites bands.

8. Shackled - Vertical Horizon
Haven't even listened to this one yet --- okay thus far.

9. Fortune Favors The Brave
Yes, I have the soundtrack from the broadway show that I went to in Middle School on a trip. Deal with it.

10. Bad Day - Daniel Powter
Incredibly overplayed and overused, but still a song that I can listen to when I'm down.

1.) "Gimme More" - FredAlba
2.) "Ratso Rizzo" - Laptop
3.) "Crawl" - Thisway
4.) "Wild World" - Cat Stevens
5.) "Crying Shame" - Jack Johnson
6.) "Dead On Arrival" - Fall Out Boy
7.) "Oh Darling!" - Sahara Hotnights

Nothing really embarassing, though I always feel like I should be vaguely ashamed of actually liking FOB.

Hey everyone,
Wow. I had no idea so many of you would actually play along with this! Awesome. I'll have to do this more regularly... gonna try to reply to everyone... here we go.

Anon 1:44,
Your shuffle was kind to you.. Lennon, S&G, Cash? Nice.

The shuffle was not kind to you... DMB, Paris and Nelly? Ouch.

Not So Anonymous 2:11,
You know I've always admired your music taste. Well done as usual.

The Girl Least Likely To,
Woulda been cool if The Boy Least Likely To popped up. Alas. I actually think there's nothing embarrassing on that list...

I may or may not have some Jack Johnson on the playlist too. Shh, don't tell anyone.

Hot name. Hot playlist. Glad to see another Format fat.

I love you for being the first to leave little commentary with your list. I can't believe you admitted to having once watched "Cowboy Bebop." I totally did too.

Anon 3:15,
I will probably take your advice re: Sam's Town. Not a bad idea. I am ashamed that I once promoted Panic! at the Disco. We all make mistakes. =) But I'm glad someone took to them..

Anon 3:23,
Major kudos for having Stellastarr* on there. Love you.

Nice to see a Tegan and Sara song on there!!

Salisbury Hill?? YES! Heard it at karaoke two weeks ago...

Is it weird if I sing Nelly Furtado in the shower every morning? Why is she so catchy?

Love the LCD Soundsystem and NIN on there.

Farewell is my favorite Rosie song.

Anon 8:23,
Not too embarrassing? The Eagles Anon 8:23. The Eagles. =) Jk. Love the other tracks though.

Nice group there... Ani, Weezer, Tori, NIN, Bowie, Neil, S&G... very generous shuffle!

Anon 12:01,
Lot of NIN popping up in the comments. Awesome. Trent's a genius. You may also be the only other person I know with Blind Melon's 2 x 4 still on the playlist.

Anon 6:12,
That's awesome that you have a Silly Pipe Music playlist! Even more awesome is seeing Eva Cassidy on the shuffle!

Check Sanity,
I love Loudon Wainwright III.

Great shuffle. Magnetic Fields, Neko, Willie...

Back to back Shins. Nice shuffle. I don't think I've ever heard a cover of When the Stars Go Blue that's better than the original... and Debbie IS awesome.

I actually deleted all my A New Found Glory a few weeks ago. Seeing it on your list kind of made me miss them.

That is quite the schizophrenic list you had there.

You're welcome, thanks for leaving a comment!

Thanks for introducing me to The Dog and Everything!

I prefer the original Walking With A Ghost as well.

Anon 12:49,
First person with a Queen song. Congrats! I was obssessed with that Jayhawks song for my entire 8th grade year. Ah, memories.

I still remember The Shape Of My Heart video sadly. Glad you're finally watching FNL!

Nice commentary, love the songs.

I have one Plumb song on my playlist. I think it's God-Shaped Hole?

Margot and the Nuclear So and So's are splendid.

I don't think I've ever heard Si*Se before.

Glad your exam went well! Wait til you get to the middle episodes of FNL.

Not So Anonymous 4:53,
Can we go to Amoeba again soon? Your shuffle was REALLY generous. I'd listen to all of those songs on repeat all night.

Old 97's! Nice! and I love "Dakota".. do you watch Veronica Mars at all? Great use of that song in an episode..

You may start a Sonny fan club. =)

Serious pondering?? No pondering involved with the Shuffle my friend. Just put your playlist on shuffle, click ten times, and prepared to be proud or embarrassed of your musical collection. =)

I almost tracked you down and shot your computer for you when I saw your first song. =)

Anon 11:50,
Nice to see The Format on there!

Where It Ends? AWESOME. So glad you guys are liking his stuff. I'll let him know you're digging the new tune... thanks for the kind words too.

Did I really convert you to Guster? Because that kind of made my day.

Lot of Jack Johnson in the comments. Surprising. And I hear ya on FOB, we can be vaguely ashamed together.

Hi Anon 4:09,
Love the Kooks track. It is so addicting. I've never given CYHSY a chance... I hear the new album's pretty good. And Come On Eileen is one of the best karaoke songs ever.
