Under The Covers

Hope you guys enjoyed the Bowie covers last time. This week, we go "Under The Covers" with Radiohead.

There are a LOT of Radiohead covers out there, Wikipedia has a nice list going on, but honestly, most Radiohead covers tend to suck. There's an incredibly horrible tribute album called Anyone Can Play Radiohead. Oh, the irony. No, not just anyone can play Radiohead. Ever since Christopher O'Riley released those two jazz cover albums (both of which I enjoy sometimes), there seems to have been an onslaught of jazz/lounge/electronica musicians who are determined to butcher every Radiohead song. Well, all that is so yesterday (I wonder if there are any Hilary Duff covers out there), now all the cool kids are listening to country/folk covers of Radiohead. And I totally dig it. Especially Gillian Welch's cover of "Black Star", one of my favorite Radiohead songs ever, which you can find below.

A few tracks I don't have that I really want to check out are Duncan Sheik's cover of "Fake Plastic Trees", Nickel Creek's version of "Just", Brandi Carlile's take on "Creep", and Peter Mulvey's cover of "Airbag". If you happen to have any of these, my inbox is patiently waiting...
*EDIT: Thanks to everyone who emailed me these songs! Much appreciated! Still looking for the Peter Mulvey cover, so holler if you come across it.

Check out the tunes below and leave a comment! Any ideas for next week? The Beatles? Leonard Cohen? Britney Spears??

Thank you so much for the music! I haven't listened to much Radiohead until lately (gasp!). I don't know where my head was. Strangely enough, my Radiohead research only started after hearing Nickelcreek do "Nice Dream" and "High and Dry" in concert. (You have seen them live, haven't you?)

I too would love to hear any Peter Mulvey covers. I followed him religiously when I was in college (96-98ish) but don't enjoy his new stuff as much as the coffee house days.

Are there enough WHAM! covers out there? That would be a hilarious list. Wake me up!

Have a great weekend!

Wow I can't believe anyone would even have the gall to create an "Anyone can PLay Radiohead" album. What were those people smoking?

Come on, Captain, you can do better. These covers are weak; Amanda Rogers is the only one who doesn't make my ears bleed, and even that's pushing it. As much as I appreciate a weekly covers post, I think this one clearly demonstrates that Radiohead covers should not be attempted. And KT Tunstall should just not attempt anything, ever again.

But like I said, thanks for the post anyway. Looking forward to next week's covers!

Hey Krissie,
I have not seen Nickel Creek live, definitely on my list of things to do.

Wham covers eh? I'll look into that.

Hi Megan,

Hi Anon 11:09,
You're welcome!

Hey Not So Anonymous 12:36,
Nice to hear from you.

I just Netflix friend-ed you!

Ugh... I really need to stop procrastinating and write this paper that I've been "working on" all afternoon.

Thanks again for the tunes. I like the Amanda Rogers one best, though I didn't abhor the rest like that other commenter.

I had a really long, rambly comment going and thought better of it. It's been a long week. Beatles next, or "Silly Pop Songs covered by Artists With Cred" (see your previous contributions, e.g. Ben Gibbard's Complicated). As long as you keep that a-MAY-zing picture of the kitten, I'll be just fine. Thanks, as always. ;-)

Hello TV Soulmate !
I've never listened to much kind of scares me. But I'll give it a whirl; just for you.

I'm thinking a Britney Spears cover post might be a great way to celebrate her getting out of rehab ! Weee !

What about old school - Immaculate Collection covers? I have a Tori Amos cover of Like a Prayer (my most favorite song, everrrrr).

Have a great weekend !

Hi Megan,
Awesome, we're officially Netflix friends! We have pretty good movie compatibility!

Hope your paper's all finished now, and I'm glad you enjoyed the covers. Fairly certain the "other commenter" is my ex. Everyone say hello.

Hey NYOne,
I love long, rambly comments. Sorry you had a long week... I like the the Silly Pop Songs covered by Artists With Cred idea! I will probably steal it. Thank you. Glad you like the kitten picture. Unfortunately, it is not my kitten.

Hi Lauren,
Thanks for the song!! Not bad, I liked it. I've always enjoyed Duncan Sheik's voice..

Hi Katie,
Radiohead scares you?? Good thing we're TV soulmates because we're clearly not musical soulmates!!

Tori Amos does an amazing cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit."

Hope you have a great weekend too!

Hi Anon 3:42,
You're welcome!

Hi Vaedri,
Glad you like the songs!

I had not heard the Damien Rice cover of Creep. That's probably my favorite. Have you heard his cover of Prince's "When Doves Cry"? It's pretty good. Here are three of the songs that you were looking for.

Duncan Sheik - Fake Plastic Trees

Nickel Creek - Just

Brandi Carlile - Creep

Thanks for these -- am looking forward to hearing KT Turnstall's cover and also the John Mayer.

Sadly, despite having faithfully subscribed to your site for over a year now, my tastes have not evolved too much.

Just wanted to stop lurking for a bit and say thanks and hello for all the great music you consistently post. It's been nice to come visit the site and see the updates of all kinds.

Thanks again!

These covers are really gorgeous! I must admit I had never heard anything from Radiohead before this. But now I gotta listen to them!
I also enjoyed your WKUK post. Trevor is adorable and their sketches are great. I was laughing my ass off especially to the music videos! Both Hitler Rap and We Gon make love! :D
Thanks a lot for all the music and your great recommendations! :)

Thank you so much!

FYI, Jamie Cullum did a jazz version of 'High and Dry', possibly one of my favourite covers ever. I'd be happy to send you the soundfile....if I knew how.

A Nickel Creek Song I hadn't heard? Wow, I'm slipping. Thanks Brandon!

My favorite covers that you should maybe consider?
Toxic- Britney Spears (Nickel Creek)
When Doves Cry- Prince (Damien Rice)
To Love Somebody- The Beegees (Damien Rice and Ray LaMontagne)
Subterranean Homesick Blues- Bob Dylan (Nickel Creek during "The Fox")
Bitches Ain't Shit- Dr. Dre (Ben Folds)
Seven Nation Army- The White Stripes (Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan)
Guess which bands are my favorite...
If you're going to see Nickel Creek, better hurry. They're breaking up the end of this year. And that is not a show to be missed. I've seen them four times now.

Oh, and let us know when you see Eddie Izzard! I know you're busy, but I'm curious to hear what you think.

thanks for the songs, though covers never do radiohead favorite is not really a radiohead "cover" at all, but is a live version of michael stipe singing "lucky" with the band. it's amazing; you should look for it!

speaking of covers, i love your concept! i'm a sucker for covers esp. those pop songs done by rock bands (and vice versa). anyway, about radiohead covers, i've got karma police by panic! at the disco and tori amos on my multiply. I'm posting the link below so feel free to download away. You'll see a whole bunch of my fave cover songs there as well so that may give you some ideas. I actually did an All-Creep and All-Hit Me Baby (One More Time) cover playlist over at multiply too.
