iPod Roulette

Life has been a bit crazy lately, so I'm going with my default "lazy" post today. It's been a while since our last round, but I'm sure you all remember the rules:

Post the first ten songs that pop up on iTunes when you hit shuffle.

Leave a comment with your own shuffle list!

"Buttons" - Pussycat Dolls [buy album]
... I, um... a friend sent this to me...and I forgot to delete it? Oh, who am I kidding, I totally get dressed to this every morning.

"Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again" - Bob Dylan [buy album]
Pussycat Dolls to Bob Dylan. I like to think of myself as a well-rounded person. Yep, that's how I'm gonna spin this, and I'm sticking to it. Blood On The Tracks is my favorite Dylan album, but Blonde On Blonde is a close second.

"As Long As You're Mine" - Cast of Wicked [buy album]
Really bringing out the skeletons here. Okay, I was obsessed with this play for a while. And yes, I am straight. When I worked at NBC, I had the pleasure of getting free tickets to see a private matinee show with its original cast, including the amazing Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith. I'm not a big musical theater fan, but my God, this was amazing. I walked around the city for the next month constantly listening to the soundtrack on my iPod and unabashedly singing along. This was also a dateless month for me. Probably no correlation there.

"Hard To Live (In The City)" - Albert Hammond Jr. [buy album]
Click on the above link and buy this album. It is wonderful.

"As You Wish" - Aqueduct [buy album]
David Terry writes incredibly catchy melodies, and this song definitely reflects that. Lyrically, "As You Wish" is entirely based around lines from The Princess Bride, which is awesome. Also check out "Living A Lie" from this album.

"Publish My Love" - Rogue Wave [buy album]
Of course, we can't go an iPod Shuffle without encountering a song once featured on The OC. I hear Schwartz's NBC pilot, Chuck, turned out really well, and I am told he uses some great tunes in the show, which of course comes as no surprise. The buzz is also good for his other pilot, Gossip Girl, for The CW. Here's some insider scoop regarding what the pilot landscape's looking like for the upcoming upfronts.

"Dizzy" - Ours [buy album]
I've talked about this band before for one reason: Jimmy Gnecco, their lead singer. The best male voice I've ever heard live. The band has a new album coming out, I think it was produced by Rick Rubin. Check out the tracks on MySpace.

"Soul Singer In A Session Band" - Bright Eyes [buy album]
I like the new album. This is one of the better songs off of it. Random thought of the day: Tobey Maguire looked a lot like Conor Oberst with his emo-Spidey-angry-hair in Spiderman 3. Fact of the day: Spiderman 3 was extremely disappointing.

"Eight Days A Week" - The Beatles
Best band ever, duh. Love this song, but didn't post it 'cause I don't want to get sued. Also love Ted from Scrubs singing it at Turk's wedding in Season Three, which you can see at the end of this clip. Speaking of "Eight Days A Week", there's a pilot at The CW with the same title that sounds pretty interesting. Starring Mario Lopez (Slater!), Anna Chlumsky (My Girl!), Johnny Lewis (Chili!), and Christina Milian (Hot!), it's a single-cam comedy about "four twentysomethings who work for the top movers and shakers in New York." I'd watch that.

"What A Girl Wants" - Christina Aguilera [buy album]
Really? This is what we're ending with? My iTunes hates me. And I kind of hate myself too. We're never playing this game again.

1. "If I Could Turn Back The Hands Of Time" - R Kelly.
What an opening! I used to annoy my sister by singing this and now it's gloriously back annoying me.

2. "Jesus Christ Was An Only Child" - Modest Mouse.
This is what I call a clash. Modest Mouse following R Kelly. And with whom? None other than Jesus.

3. "Tous les garçons et les filles" - Raymond & Maria.
Nice cover version of Françoise Hardy's 1962 chanson by Swedish pop group Raymond & Maria. Their song "Ingen vill veta var du köpt din tröja" (Nobody wants to know where you bought your sweater) lights up every day.

4. "Tyrant" - The Bravery.
I don't even really know this song, but there are some good tracks on the album. Pretty underrated.

5. "Cry Me A River" - Julie London.
This one's on the "V For Vendetta" soundtrack. Feels way more pleasing by now than Justin Timberlakes same titled song.

6. "Dreaming" - Zero 7.
Dreaming is what this band is all about. At times that's nice, at times it's not.

7. "Cigarettes And Chocolate Milk" - Rufus Wainwright.
"A little bit sweeter, a little bit fatter". Same story as with dreaming.

8. "Cheers For Fears" - Tocotronic.
One of the weaker songs on the fabulous album "Pure Vernunft Darf Niemals Siegen" (Pure Reason May Never Prevail) by German band Tocotronic. They probably should stick to German lyrics.

9. "The Don" - The View.
Very drunk song by young Scottish band The View. Reminds of the times, when Oasis came out with "Definitely Maybe.

10. "How Could I Forget" - The Faint.
Save the best for last. Amazing dark disco song by Nebraska rockers.

How sad, brings tears. Greys song of course!

2. Arctic Circle - Royskopp
Not one of my favorite Royskopp numbers but not too bad nonetheless.

3. On A Saturday - Jacob Golden
Having quite the mellow music come out...this one reminds me of such a oc song. I miss the music from The OC!

4. I'm Raving, I'm Raving (Walking in Memphis) - Scooter
Love it, when it hits the chorus its such a fun one!

5. Cruel Summer - Banarama
Ah, the eighties are back on my itunes haha.

6. All This Love - The Similou
So So So overplayed and killed now, but when it first came out, loved it!

My favourite Shins song!

Good good good electro/dance song...whatever you want to label it!

Squee – you know I’ve been waiting for another round of iTunes Roulette forever! In fact, I went ahead and did a round for my own blog a while back – check it out if you have a second. Between a PCD track AND a showtune (love Wicked) I am loving your latest Shuffle. So I decided not to be lazy, and to produce a brand new list of my own. NB: this is my work computer and so is missing most of the really embarrassing stiff that seems to dominate my laptop’s iTunes library.
1. Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town – Tony Bennett.
I take back what I just said. Well, no there is nothing wrong with this per se, it is Tony Bennett after all, but I have WAY too much Christmas music (especially for a Jew) in both of my libraries and I really should clear it out for the 10 months of the year that I don’t listen to it.
2. Pain in my Heart – Otis Redding
You can never go wrong with a little Otis and I really think that I got this track from SPD, though I can’t for the life of me recall what show it was from.
3. Curtain Calls – Old 97’s
It would most definitely NOT be a decent iTunes Roulette without some Old 97’s.
4. I am God – Wannabes
Or a song or two from VM. This was a fantastic episode. And that was a LONG time ago.
5. Opposite Direction – Union of Knives
Haven’t the foggiest. Catchy, though.
6. I’ll Be Home on Christmas Day – Elvis
Ok, WTF, iTunes? This isn’t even I’ll Be Home For Christmas. I have never heard this song before in my life.
7. My Conviction – Actor’s Fund recording of Hair, sung by Charles Busch
This is an amazing album, with some of Broadway’s biggest stars. My Conviction is twee at best; I would have been way more psyched to get Raul Esparza’s take on the title song.
8. Ain’t No Reason – Brett Dennen
Huh, I really have no idea what this is either.
9. I Saw Three Ships – Sting
Oh, COME ON.
10. It’s a Hit – Rilo Kiley
Well, at least we’re ending on a positive note.
All in all, not nearly as good as the one I have posted on my blog, but also not as ridiculous as the one I sent you a while back. Music: 7 Embarrassment Factor: 5

First -- I'm cracking up at the post by NYONE. I had to relocate my Holiday folder a month ago!! And the "Opposite Directions" song is from Grey's -- it is sometimey one for me.

Here's me list:
1. "Bring It On Home" - Little Big Town

(Great Sounding Band (2 guys and 2 gals--country)- First heard this in a story about their Grammy nominations on NPR and this is a great song)

2."You Get What You Give" - Brand New Radicals

(LOVE LOVE LOVE this song, I crank it up everytime I hear it!)

3. "Buddy" Remix - Musiq

(Very Catchy)

4."Here I Dreamt I was An Architect" - The Decemberists

(This song is from this site, never listened to this band before, but are now on my lists of bands to get aquainted with)

5." Love at First Sight" - Kylie Minoque

(This is from NOW that's I call Music 11 -- I swear I only have this one....and oh yeah Now - 2)

6. " Y'a Du Monde" Dany Bedard

(I was flipping through channels maybe 2 years ago, landed on the Canadian music awards show and this guy was getting an award for this song. They played the clip for this song and I liked!)

7. "My All" Mariah Carey

(Mariah was best back then! But her "Emancipation of Mimi" was good --kind of proud of her for that one after the whole Glitter thing)

8. "World Spins Madly On" - The Weepies

(Again from this site, from Grey's --- Great Harmony!)

9. "How It Ends" DeVotchka

(Form "Little Miss Sunshine"---Love that Movie)

10. Spoon - Line in The Suit

(Ooh Ooh! This is an old song by Spoon , my first taste of them and one of my faves ---!!!)

Very interesting how we find music, huh? And crazy how we like to share it with strangers!!!

Hey, Captain.

Since Ours popped up, I'm going to suggest your read How to Kill a Rock Star by Tiffanie DeBartolo. She's said that the book is heavily influenced by Ours' music and the main character has Jimmy Gnecco's voice.

In fact, you should read her first novel, God Shaped Hole, as well. That's the book that got me into Jeff Buckley.

1. The Decemberists- The Mariner's Revenge Song
This was definitely the highlight of their concert, which was pretty amazing itself

2. Ben Folds- Rockin' the Suburbs
The "fuck" in the middle is amazingly fun to yell along to. Particularly at parties.

3. Minus the Bear- Memphis and 53rd
I really liked Highly Refined Pirates, but their Menos el Oso album didn't really do it for me. This is one of the better songs on it, though.

4. Velocity Girl- There's Only One Thing Left To Say
Yay, twee. No, this has nothing to do with the Snow Patrol song of the same name as the band.

5. The Format- Sore Thumb
This would be guilty pleasure music, but they're too good to make me feel guilty.

6. Death Cab for Cutie- 405
Live recordings kind of bug me. Not because the songs aren't often better that way, but because I have no interest in listening to an audience cheer. Thus, I haven't listened to this many times.

7. Tegan & Sara- Where Did the Good Go?
I got kind of bored with them. But they have their moments.

8. Rogue Wave- Crush the Camera
I like Rogue Wave a lot, but this song annoys the hell out of me. It's only still on my iPod because it's part of my lame Harry Potter themed playlist, haha.

9. Alien Ant Farm- Criminal
I was wondering when I was going to hit something embarrassing...

10. Natural Snow Buildings- All Animals in the Form of Water
So some of my music is pretty pretentious...

1. Deep Blue - Peter Mulvey

2. Everytime You Say Goodbye - Allison Krauss
I love her voice
3. This Time Around - Howie Day
We saw him a few years ago with Nickelcreek and he did all his music with just his guitar and effects. It was awesome. Now People puts him hanging out with Brittney Spears. give me a break.

This is the hubby's contriution to the list...I officially don't know this song, although I have been known to be a parrothead at times.

1. The View from the Afternoon by Arctic Monkeys: I think I got this one here! How appropriate.

5. Push (acoustic version) by Matchbox 20
6. Punk by Gorillaz: wow, these are really random. Which I guess is the point.

9. Spin the Black Circle (live in Philly) by Pearl Jam: a great song from the best concert I've ever been to!
10. Material Girl by Madonna: what a way to close

I love this game! Here's a (admittedly, lame-o) similar game that I came up with, and played on my birthday with family and friends: pick out 5 songs from your ipod that others wouldn't expect from you, submit the list to a non-playing "judge", then the judge names the song title/artist, and you guess who's ipod it came from. write down your answers. if you're the only one to get it right, double points. most points wins. HOURS of fun, and surprises...
